Staying Safe When the Heat’s On: Summer Driving Tips for Your Fleet

Written by Kathryn Deluzio | Jul 7, 2025 7:03:50 PM

Summer might mean blue skies and open roads, but for truckers, it also means heavier traffic, distracted drivers, and higher risks. As the busiest travel season ramps up, fleet safety needs to shift into high gear. Keeping trucks rolling safely through the heat, construction zones, and tourist traffic starts with preparation—and a strong commitment to safety on every run.

What Makes Summer Driving Different?

  • More vehicles. Roads fill up with vacationers, teen drivers, motorcycles, and folks towing boats or campers they barely know how to handle. That means more unpredictable traffic, more sudden stops, and more near-misses.

  • More distractions. From cell phones to GPS apps, distracted drivers are everywhere. And with longer daylight hours, road fatigue becomes a real concern, especially for long-haul drivers logging big miles.

  • More construction zones. Orange cones and lane shifts slow traffic to a crawl. Gridlock gets worse in peak hours—and even back roads aren’t immune, packed with bikers, joggers, and local traffic.

Keep It Safe with These Summer Driving Tips

  • Plan Smart. Avoid peak congestion times and hot zones like major vacation routes on Friday afternoons. Use apps and DOT websites to route around traffic and construction—but only check them during breaks, never behind the wheel.

  • Drive Defensively. Expect tailgaters and blind-spot lingerers. Keep extra space between vehicles, take your time passing, and give plenty of warning with your signals. Out-of-state plates often mean confused drivers, so be patient and stay sharp.

  • Keep Equipment in Check. Summer heat is tough on tires, brakes, and cooling systems. Blowouts spike this time of year, so tire pressure should be checked daily. Make sure coolant levels are good and A/C systems are keeping things cool inside the cab.

  • Hydrate and Rest. High temps wear out drivers faster. Drink water, use your A/C, and take short recovery breaks to stay alert. Fatigue is no friend behind the wheel, so rest up between hauls and stick to HOS rules.

  • Watch for Distractions. Distracted driving is one of the top causes of accidents, especially in summer. Keep your eyes on the road and steer clear of others glued to their phones or drifting between lanes.

Truckers play a critical role in keeping highways safe—and summer only raises the stakes. By staying proactive, keeping equipment tight, and taking care of both truck and driver, fleets can stay ahead of the heat and the hazards.
