Creating a Second Life: Cat G3616 Engine Rebuild

Making Strides Environmentally
The G3616 engine is a natural gas compression engine created for the petroleum industry, particularly pipelining. Its main function is to store, gather and re-inject gas back into the compressor to maintain a consistent flow of gas up the pipeline.
The 69,500 lb. G3616 engine has the ability to burn a wide spectrum of gaseous fuels and offers a broad operating speed range. Recent enhancements include better fuel tolerance, improved emissions controls, and an overall smaller, more conducive design to improve performance.
These advancements have overall lowered both owning and operating costs, making this a more affordable decision to our customers.
Project G3616 Engine Overhaul
With an engine as robust and complex as the G3616, an overhaul is no small task at hand. Piece by piece, this entire engine was broken down and each part was completely examined, tested, repaired or replaced.
Our Erie technicians worked 10 hours a day on this G3616, spending a total of 750 hours—and that’s just on the rebuild! Once you include pickup, removal, and installation, it easily adds an additional 100 hours.
After months of intense labor, testing and planning, this engine has finally been restored and returned to its original site. While this engine is unique and was an exciting project, it is just one of many that we receive and have the opportunity to work on.
