NRG Pressure Pumping Technologies (NRG), one of the leading well service Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) in the nation and partner of Cleveland Brothers, celebrates their 20th anniversary this year with a strong service offering and new technology in the field.

While NRG opened primarily as a custom drilling and rig component manufacturer in 2000 and started with a modest six-bay assembly shop in Tomball, Texas, things drastically changed for the company when Marcellus Shale took off in the northeast. Since then, NRG has transformed into an energy OEM company that designs and manufactures complete hydraulic fracturing trailers composed of top-notch equipment, which can include Cat engines, transmissions, fluid ends and power ends.

New Washington Facility

Although based in Texas, NRG discovered a need and seized the opportunity in the northeast. By opening a Pennsylvania facility, NRG could continue to offer quick and exceptional service to customers in the Marcellus Shale territory. NRG’s Grant Ayo, Vice President of Operations stated, “While Houston is considered the hub for oil and gas, there is not much fracing within a 50-mile radius. Most of the major formations are more than a day’s travel time away, which highlights several concerns around downtime. The need to have an immediate response was the basis for NRG Pressure Pumping Technologies to expand its newest service location in Washington, Pa.”

This recent unveiling of their newest service center in Washington has helped the company to compete more competitively while supporting their customers in the northeast. Ayo stated, “Our Pennsylvania service center has the capacity to do full refurbishment and rebuild of all well servicing equipment, preventative maintenance, and is stocked with all the parts and components needed to keep fleets up and running with minimal downtime. This center also brings the knowledge and experience of the leading frac equipment OEM in the nation to the northeast. The facility houses technicians for both the NRG pressure pumping equipment line as well as our AMI Controls & Analytics. In the future, this location will also support our field proven Durastim® pump technology that went into production early 2019 and is in production with a fleet operating in New Mexico.”

With this new facility and values of quality, dependability and customer support, NRG discovered a need for dependable, local vendors to partner with that had similar priorities and objectives. “Cleveland Brothers has proven to us that they have the same expectations when it comes to rapid response and minimal downtime,” Ayo said. That’s when, almost two years ago, the partnership with Cleveland Brothers began.

Top Manufacturer Chooses Top Equipment

As a certified Cat Dealer, Cleveland Brothers offers top-of-the-line Cat engines, transmissions, fluid ends, and power ends for the oil and gas industry. These engines range from a Cat C1.1 to the massive GCM 34-16 and are built to run and last continuously, even in the harshest conditions. Of these offerings, the power and dependability of the 3512 engine well suited the needs of NRG and have since helped grow their business.

“The Cat line of well servicing engines and transmissions is one of the most sought-after packages by service providers in our industry,” Ayo stated. “Our customers expect a reliable product that can withstand the harsh operating environment of the well pad that does not cave to the abuse that a frac pump frequently gets.”

Now, NRG is a well-respected OEM that partners with Caterpillar and has put nearly two million horsepower of Cat powered equipment in the field. The majority of these frac trailers utilize 2500 horsepower 3512 engines with a TH55 transmission, equating to the production of about 800 trailers. With this volume of engines and transmissions on the field and little to no downtime to afford, servicing this equipment quickly and efficiently is the prerogative of Cleveland Brothers, NRG and every customer.

A Quality Partner Offers Quality Service

In the oil and gas industry, reliable equipment is just the start. Unfailing, dependable service plays just as big of a role in the industry as producing quality equipment. Ayo weighed in on the importance of service to NRG, “With an industry that demands quality and timeliness and usually holds nothing back to achieve that, we are a firm believer that you will not make it far if that is not the foundation your services are built upon. There is not one service provider in our industry that has the ability to accommodate delays. Cleveland Brothers has shown they understand the industry and are always trying to stay one step ahead. From the moment we started doing business together, they [Cleveland Brothers] understood our expectations and the expectations of our customers.”

Because of this mutual understanding and reliability offered by Cleveland Brothers, NRG uses the company’s parts, service and engine sales departments in their frac trailer packages. Last year alone, Cleveland Brothers serviced nearly a dozen Cat engines for NRG including eight 3512C engine overhauls, two C18 overhauls and a partial 3512C crankshaft replacement. With a cutting-edge parts department, Cleveland Brothers is able to provide NRG with parts in a matter of hours instead of days. This helps NRG to get the service and the parts they need on time and with no disruption to business.

Additionally, Cleveland Brothers dedicates two in-house engine training instructors to educate NRG employees (and other customers’ employees) on Cat engines—including Tier4 engines—so their technicians are more familiar and well versed with the equipment. This innovative training offered by Cleveland Brothers helps customers like NRG to save time and costs which progresses the company’s growth and overall knowledge in the field.

As leaders like Cleveland Brothers and NRG with a commitment to servicing the industry continue to collaborate, customers in the Appalachian region can discover quality equipment, service and innovation. With timely service and support from Cleveland Brothers, NRG is one step closer to completing their objective to help service providers in the northeast receive the attention they deserve by bringing the full capabilities of a frac OEM to western Pennsylvania.
