The Best Time to Begin a Landscaping Project

Whether you own a landscaping company or are looking to improve your own yard, a landscaping project can be a major undertaking for anyone. You’ll need to determine the size and scope of the job and what you want to accomplish while considering budget, resources and time.

When Should You Begin a Landscaping Project?

Several factors influence the best time to start landscaping work, but it’s important to consider them all:

1. Time of Year

With sometimes harsh temperatures in the winter or late summer (in Pennsylvania), landscaping is typically best done in the spring, early summer or fall. Both spring and fall are great seasons to plant trees, shrubs, flowers or anything with mature roots. In the fall, roots are typically dormant which allows plenty of time for a tree to develop its roots. In the spring, the weather is not yet too extreme and typically offers sunshine and rain, which help stimulate plant and root growth.

2. Plant Selection and Timing

Additionally, plants oftentimes have optimal planting schedules and vary in hardiness, so picking appropriate plants for the season should factor in when deciding what plants to landscape with. For example, if you are transplanting a mature tree, doing so in late spring might not give the roots enough time to recover.

3. Consider Resources and Budget

Landscaping typically has several phases including digging/excavating, mulching and planting. It’s important to ensure you can access the equipment, plants, tools and staff you need for each phase and allot the correct amount of time for each phase of your landscaping project.
