New Residential Construction Facts and Figures

The U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the following statistics for July 2016 (all annual rates are seasonally adjusted):

  • Building permits for privately owned residences in the US were at an annual rate of 1,152,000. This is slightly (0.1 percent) below the previous month’s rate but almost a full percentage point (0.9 percent) above the same month one year before (July 2015) of 1,142,000.
  • Privately owned housing starts were at an annual rate of 1,211,000. This figure is 2.1 percent higher than the revised June estimate of 1,186,000. It is also 5.6 percent more than the rate from the previous year of 1,147,000.
  • Privately owned housing completions were at an annual rate of 1,026,000, which is 8.3 percent lower than the revised June estimate of 1,119,000 but is 3.2 percent higher than the July 2015 rate of 994,000.
  • In Pennsylvania, a total of 22,854 permits for privately-owned housing units were issued in 2015. Of these, 15,420 were for single-family homes.

With the building permit numbers indicating the market is moving in an encouraging direction, having access to a source of construction equipment with the capacity to get work done quickly and efficiently is an essential part of your business plan.

Whether your particular job calls for trucks, pavers, backhoe loaders, dozers or steer skidders, Cat is the brand that won’t let you down. It’s built to be strong, tough and reliable.

Heavy Construction Equipment for Pennsylvania Climate

Depending on where you are in the state, the average temperature in Pennsylvania can vary by several degrees. If your crew is working outside, your choice of heavy equipment for the Pennsylvania climate needs to ensure that they will be comfortable no matter what type of conditions they encounter.

Cat takes operator comfort very seriously. They design their equipment with the people who use it every day in mind.

Whether they are dealing with hot and humid conditions in the summer or the cooler temperatures that come with working in the spring and fall, we understand that your operator will be able to focus more closely on getting the work done if they are feeling comfortable in the cab.

Discomfort in the work environment leads to body aches and pains, repetitive strain injuries and distractions while operating equipment. Lower productivity due to physical discomfort and increased time away from work will follow. Investing in the heavy equipment that looks after your people so they can work better from the outset makes good business sense. Look after them, and they will give you their best.

Heavy Construction Equipment for Pennsylvania New Residential Construction

You may want to consider some (or all) of the following examples of new Cat heavy construction equipment for Pennsylvania projects you take on:

AP355F Paver

AP355F Paver

The AP355F Paver comes equipped with dual seats and a contoured design for maximum visibility. Its low profile cooling system makes forward viewing much easier for the operator. The seat adjusts to multiple heights, and it has a heating function to ensure a comfortable place to sit throughout the workday.

Controls —  With their raised switch design and adjustable brightness, the controls are easy to find and read. The brightness function allows the paver to operate during the evening and after dark, as required to complete a job. A touch screen LCD allows the operator to customize the display. There are several language options, so that your operator can read them in their preferred language.

Paving Range —  This model has a standard paving range of between 5’9”-11’1”. Use the reduction attachment when you want to narrow the paving width to as little as 27.5” to perform trench work.

Heat Controls —  The operator only needs to touch the LED panel to operate the heat controls. Lights indicate which of the three pre-set temperatures in use for each screen section. The operator can override these manually. The operator uses the on-board diagnostics to verify any fault indicators.

420F Backhoe Loader

420F/420F IT Backhoe Loader

The 420F model backhoe loader was designed with your operator’s comfort in mind. Choose from the type of configuration that fits the weather your company works in most often — a Canopy, Deluxe Cab or Deluxe Cab with air conditioning.

Your operator will appreciate that this backhoe loader comes with the following features:

  • Plenty of legroom
  • Excellent visibility
  • Adjustable, air suspension seat

Storage compartments are available for tools and belongings while operating the equipment. The gauge cluster is easy to read, and the backhoe comes equipped with an Automatic Engine Speed Control to conserve fuel.

Pattern Selector —  Changing from a backhoe to an excavator is a simple matter of pressing the pattern selector button. The operator can use the pattern they are comfortable with for the job at hand, which will result in a higher level of productivity.

Your operator uses a simple-to-operate joystick to control the backhoe loader. Thumb rollers are provided to make the auxiliary functions easy, and they eliminate the need for bulky foot pedals.

Ride Control —  Available as an optional feature, the Ride Control smoothes out the ride in all conditions (including moving along the highway, traveling or moving around the job site). As you know, the terrain is often not level, and this can lead to strain on an operator’s legs, back and neck after several hours of being seated in the backhoe loader. The Ride Control minimizes bumps and jerking motions to make the ride much more comfortable throughout the workday.

Backhoe Work Tools —  This versatile equipment choice can be outfitted with a number of backhoe work tools, such as:

  • Augers
  • Buckets
  • Cold Planers
  • Hammers
  • Quick Couplers
  • Rippers
  • Thumbs (mechanical and hydraulic)
  • Vibratory Plate Compactors

Loader Attachments —  Along with the backhoe work tools, several loader attachments are also available for this piece of construction equipment.

  • Angle Blades
  • Brooms
  • Buckets
  • Forks
  • Rakes
  • Material Handling Arms
  • Snow Plows

Four Speeds —  This model gives you the option of four speeds forward and reverse. It has a powerful transmission with plenty of pushing power when you are working on rough terrain. A Four Wheel Drive option offers more mobility and greater performance when the conditions underfoot are not optimal. The best part? You can activate it on the go. Move between job sites quickly with a maximum speed of 40 mph.

D6K2 Dozer

Powerful Drive Train —  This dozer comes equipped with a Cat C.4.4 ACERT engine with twin turbochargers and a new hydrostatic transmission. You get better fuel efficiency compared to previous models combined with the most power-dense drive train available in its size class. The transmission also gives you a superior level of maneuverability and a faster-steering response function. The increased capacity to use full blade loads means you can get jobs done more quickly and efficiently.

Cooling Package —  This dozer’s cooling package has been updated to increase airflow and reduce fan speed, leading to higher efficiency. The hydraulic demand fan automatically reduces the fan speed when conditions are cooler to save fuel. A hydraulic reversing fan (optional) gives you a choice of automatic or manual modes for changing direction to remove debris from the radiator cores.

Easy to Operate —  If the DK62 is going to be part of your fleet, either permanently or as a short-term rental, it must be easy to operate. With available technologies, such as Stable Blade and Slope assist integrated into the dozer, even operators with less experience will be able to achieve a quality grade relatively quickly. The machine will work with your people to get the results you need.

Operators can use the joystick controls to make precise commands. The dozer’s balance and undercarriage have been designed to complete finish grading quickly. Use the Power Pitch function to adjust the blade directly from the cab; buttons on the right-hand control make this an easy task. The blade folds to make transporting the dozer between job sites very easy.

262D Skid Steer

262D Skid Steer

Comfortable Cab —  This 262D Skid Steer features a sealed and pressurized cab. Your operator can work in a cleaner and quieter environment while still having his work tools easily accessible. The air ride seat is available in a high-back style, with heat for comfort on cold-weather days. Seat-mounted joystick controls mean no reaching or straining to reach floor mounted stick shifts or foot pedals. Operator comfort is of prime importance.

Advanced Display Console —  Get maximized control and capability with the Advanced Display (optional). You get on-screen adjustments for creep control, implemental response and instant response. This display features customizable layouts available in several languages to suit your operator’s preference, along with a rearview camera and a security system.

Exceptional Power —  Equipped with a high-performance power train for maximum performance, the 262D features a hand/foot throttle with decel pedal capability. The Cat C3.3B engine gives the 262D a high level of horsepower and torque while meeting the requirements for the US EPA Tier 4 Final (EU Stage IIIB) emission standards.

Versatility to Take on any Job —  Optional features like Cat’s “Intelligent Leveling System”, a dual direction self-level, and the Speed Sensitive Ride Control, which helps to improve the operation of the skid steer when maneuvering over uneven terrain and increases operator comfort, means the 262D won’t back down from a challenge.

Easy Access for Service —  All routine maintenance and daily service points can be accessed from ground level. This convenience reduces the length of downtime, increasing productivity.

Heavy Equipment Operators Need the Right Training

By now, you realize the importance of choosing the right model of heavy construction equipment. Pennsylvania business owners who want to rise to the top of the pack also realize that they need to ensure that their operators have the right training to feel comfortable with the equipment they are using.

Your operator may have completed a course at a training school, an apprenticeship program or have several years of on-the-job experience with similar types of equipment already. When you are buying new equipment or renting a model that your team is unfamiliar with, it’s worthwhile to consider getting some specific Cat operator training on it. You’ll want your operator, or operators, to feel comfortable using the new equipment quickly so their productivity doesn’t take a hit and to ensure they are operating the equipment safely.

Cat Training Sessions

Cleveland Brothers understands the importance of making sure your operators have the right training for the equipment they will be using on the job site. With support from Cat and the University of Illinois, we have developed a certified operator training program.

All our courses are taught by our team of Caterpillar® Certified Trainers. We ensure they have attended the appropriate operator training programs and have the required certification to train equipment operators in the safe and efficient operation of machinery.

Types of Training

We offer training for a variety of machinery, from track-type tractors to motor graders and backhoe loaders. Program length and cost varies.

We also offer OSHA Certified training to your team members that includes a classroom and a practical component. Operators who successfully complete the course will be issued a certificate and a wallet card.

Cleveland Brothers can also provide your company with non-certified training when you take delivery of a new, rental or used machine. The orientation session covers points such as machine controls, grease and service points, fluid levels and general safety. We can arrange this type of training for the small, medium and large machines, as well as control systems we carry.
