Rebuilt for performance: inside the d8t transformation

, , | June 8, 2026 | By

At Cleveland Brothers, rebuilding equipment isn’t just about extending machine life it’s about reimagining what that machine can become. Recently, our Somerset team completed a full rebuild of a Caterpillar D8T dozer for RWS Development, delivering a machine that blends proven reliability with like-new performance.

A Second Life for a Proven Machine

Originally built in 2005, this D8T arrived at our Somerset facility in December of 2025 with 13,478 operating hours. Powered by a 347 HP C15 ACERT engine and weighing approximately 90,000 pounds. The machine had already proven its durability in demanding applications.

Cat machines of this class are designed with the intention to extend the machine life through rebuilds, typically reaching key rebuild milestones around 10,000 hours. This made the D8T an ideal candidate for a full transformation, restoring performance while maximizing long-term value.

Precision Rebuild, Custom Finish

Led by Kevin S. and Joe E., the rebuild was a true team effort. Under the leadership of Marcus A., the Somerset team brought together technicians from across the shop to deliver a high-quality, production-ready machine.

Every stage of the project from disassembly to reassembly was executed with attention to detail and craftsmanship.

The machine was also completely refinished with a custom paint scheme inspired by Caterpillar’s 100th Anniversary (2025) design. It pays homage to the original grey color of the very first Caterpillar products and the iconic red logos used in generations past. Transitioning from its original yellow color, the new finish gives the dozer a striking, modern appearance while honoring Caterpillar’s legacy.

Why Rebuild?

For RWS Development owner Rob S. the decision to rebuild instead of purchasing new came down to two key factors: cost and simplicity.

A rebuild offered significant savings — roughly half the cost of a new machine — while delivering like-new performance through refreshed components and updated systems. The machine is optimized for reliability, serviceability, and consistent performance in demanding environments. By avoiding the added complexity of newer emissions systems, it also helps reduce maintenance requirements and supports a lower total cost of ownership over time.

As Shuster put it:
“You can’t go wrong with the rebuild. You get the new machine warranty, the performance of a new machine, and the longevity and reliability.”

A Seamless Customer Experience

Throughout the rebuild process, the Cleveland Brothers team worked closely with the customer, providing regular updates and progress photos.

“The guys at Cleveland Brothers have been sending us photos of the machine all along," Shuster said. "When I walked in and saw it in person, I was blown away. The level of detail from the fabrication to the paintwork, lights, and interior I was basically speechless.”

After a complete rebuild, this D8T sits proudly in the Somerset branch yard fully restored, fully tested, and ready to go back to work. Built for performance, reliability, and the toughest jobs ahead.
He summed up the overall experience in one sentence:

“Seamless, painless, and a great overall experience from start to finish.”

Built to Perform Where It Matters

Now fully rebuilt and delivered, the D8T is back in action with RWS Development, supporting large-scale residential site clearing operations. In this environment, power, durability, and uptime are critical and this machine is built to deliver on all three.

While its showroom-quality finish may turn heads, this dozer was built for more than looks. As Shuster joked:

“It’s almost too nice to put in the dirt… but it’s definitely going to get put to work.”

With support from Tom Kapcsos as Product Support Representative, the project ensured both technical excellence and customer confidence from start to finish.
