A Custom Build: Certified Powertrain Rebuild
It’s not every day you see a Cat® 621 scraper with an attached pot carrier. That’s because, until this machine, it didn’t exist. Harsco, a worldwide company that provides onsite steel mill and resource recovery services, is known for creating and owning unique equipment to suit their very specific needs.
With a fleet of about 70 machines in Pennsylvania, Harsco works frequently with Cleveland Brothers to create and service the machines they demand. When they needed a quick-loading machine that could easily maneuver and carry big loads, they turned to Cleveland Brothers for the solution.
621 Cat Scraper Rebuild
This machine in particular has the front-end of a Cat scraper—that includes the frame, body and powertrain. However, the back-end and the hydraulics belong to Kress, the world’s leading manufacturer of slag pot carriers. Built in 2010, this machine has nearly 8,000 hours and was in desperate need of a rebuild.

That’s when mechanic Cody M. tackled this one-of-a-kind Certified Powertrain (CPT) Rebuild. This was no easy task, due to all of the modifications made and the uniqueness of the machine. Cody recently completed the project in early September with about 900 hours invested into the rebuild.
In addition to reconditioning and replacing all of the engine components, including the transmission, final drives, cooling system, pumps and valves, Cody also completed extensive work to the hydraulics. Once the rebuild was completed, the scraper received a custom paint job to match the colors of Harsco’s entire fleet.
