Storage Tips for Maximizing Battery Performance

We understand that your equipment’s reliability and productivity hinges on having a dependable battery. That’s why we’re proud to offer Cat® batteries, engineered to deliver unmatched performance, durability, and exceptional starting ability, even in extreme temperatures. But, as important as selecting the right battery is, ensuring its longevity and efficiency through proper storage and maintenance is equally crucial.

Battery Storage: Prolonging Battery Life

Whether you’re storing new batteries in your parts inventory or parking equipment for an extended period, following these battery storage tips will help extend battery life and ensure they’re ready for action when you need them.

  1. Disconnect Battery Cables: Prevent accidental discharging by disconnecting the battery cables if storing batteries for more than four weeks. This helps avoid issues caused by short circuits or devices drawing small amounts of current.
  2. Optimal Temperature: Store batteries at a constant temperature of 40-50°F in a cool, dry area. If your equipment is stored in freezing conditions during winter, remove the battery and place it in a heated space. Always store batteries fully charged and avoid storing in below-freezing temperatures.
  3. Safe Stacking: If stacking batteries, ensure they are in cartons or on shipping pallets protected by corrugated packaging. Avoid stacking batteries more than two high for stability.
  4. Concrete Floors Are Safe: Contrary to popular belief, it’s safe to place batteries directly on concrete floors. Modern batteries feature polypropylene containers that provide insulation to prevent discharging into the floor.
  5. Practice FIFO: Adopt the “first in, first out” (FIFO) method for your battery stock. Cat batteries include a date code on the cover, indicating the month and year of shipment. “A” is for January, “B” is for February and that pattern continues. The number indicates the year. Ensure you use batteries in the order they were received.

At Cleveland Brothers, we’re committed to your equipment’s performance and longevity. By following these battery safety and storage best practices, you not only safeguard yourself and your team but also ensure that your Cat batteries are always ready to deliver top-notch performance when you need them. Trust in the reliability and quality of Cat batteries and let proper storage and maintenance be the key to unlocking their full potential. Contact Cleveland Brothers today to discover the perfect battery solution for your needs and ensure your equipment is always ready to perform at its best.
